The idea for this film was born on a balmy summer night in 2001, under a bright full moon on the deck of a gorgeous beach house called the "Sand Castle", perched atop the dunes of Cherry Grove on Fire Island, New York. Michael Brewer and Thomas Alan Berg - best friends for 25 years - were celebrating the huge success of Michael's wedding, an event that had just made Fire Island history. A statue of Michelangelo's David overlooked the scene proudly - while a gay freedom flag flapped happily in the breeze. All was right with the world that night - just weeks before the darkness of 9/11 descended - and all good things seemed possible! Little did anyone realize how much the world would need new voices of hope and inspiration that night in August of 2001 when the idea for this amazing new form of film was born!
Sitting together beneath the full moon the night after the wedding, Michael and Tom were beginning to come to grips with an amazing realization: they had just made Michael's dream to marry his soulmate come true before the admiring eyes of all of Cherry Grove as well as Michael's entire family. The lavish wedding ceremony of Michael and Remo - with Tom as their proud best man - not only thrilled everyone in attendance - but also made Tom and Michael ponder the awesome potential of their combined powers of deliberate creation. They knew that were tapping into something "cosmic", and that they were well on the way to learning how to access their power to become deliberate creators!
Michael and Tom knew deep down in their Spirits that something absolutely extraordinary had just transpired. They had discovered that they could successfully merge their gay lives and loves with their artistic and spiritual lives, and create their highest and best dreams into actual 3D reality, irregardless of what society said or believed. Nothing could stop them from fulfilling their destinies. Fire Island had been set aglow with the joy of their co-creation, and the thrill of it all sparked the idea for the birth of this film adventure.
Together, Tom and Michael looked back on all they'd learned about their lives as creative, enlightened, gay men, leading up to that magical week that made "dreams came true", when suddenly (almost as if the David and the moon had collaborated to "zap them") a powerfulflash of inspiration came over them. They laughed with a knowing joy as they began to visualize their "next logical step" as cocreative teammates and brothers. A film (adaptable as a TV series) would be the perfect vehicle to express their shamanic vision of gay spiritual potential to the world at large.
They chose the media of film because they believe it to be the highest form of communication available today. So, there on the deck in Cherry Grove under the full moon and rainbow flag they were "given" the idea for this film and television series. They would travel the globe in search of a new mythology - one broad enough to acknowledge, embrace and celebrate the presence of gay spirit on the planet today.
As gay men in midlife, Tom and Michael have both experienced the evolution of gay liberation from pre-Stonewall oppression, through the explosion of the Gay Pride movement, all the way up to and through the aids epidemic, and into this New Millennium's quest for equal rights to marry. However, exciting as all that "progress" was, what they saw as the "missing link" and the last, most important key to full gay equality on this planet, was RECOGNITION of the multidimensional spirituality of the gay life, and its extraordinary contribution to the evolution of mankind and the cosmos as a whole. Michael and Tom felt that it was time to stop asking for equality, or begging for political freedom and to begin declaring their right to freedom and equality by virtue of their true identity as God Beings.
Once they determined that this was the basis for their vision and their dream, they knew the perfect place to begin their vision quest for a film about full spiritual liberation must begin at the Vatican, where much of the oppression began. So, they began traveling and filming in 2002, starting at Michael's home outside Zurich, Switzerland. The first "power point" they visited was Carl Jung's home in Küsnacht on Lake Zurich, where they invited the spirits of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell to guide them on this first filmed hero's journey. Little did they realize the power their invocation for multidimensional help was going to have in making this first film a glorious reality.
The amazingly serendipitous adventure that ensued has now resulted in this first film, which is also a pilot for a TV series. It is obvious to anyone who watches it, that Michael and Tom did indeed invoke and receive "help from on high", just as Gay Shaman have always been able to achieve. "Out & About with Brewer & Berg - In Search of a New Mythology is the realization of a dream come true. This film truly does offer a new way of looking at the world, and is in itself a whole new art form - one that is greatly needed at this pivotal time in human history! Gay shamans have always assisted mankind in making quantum leaps, and Michael and Tom demonstrate clearly in this film that this proud tradition of "structure busting" and new myth-making is continuing into the New Millennium!
