Review by Toby Johnson

A new way of producing and publishing the information that used to be limited to books is now beginning to appear. It's in the form of the television show on DVD or videotape.
Joseph Kramer's EroSpirit has been producing high quality lectures and programs for video in the area of spirituality and sexuality for some years now ( Fire on the Mountain: An Intimate Guide to Male Erotic Massage is perhaps Kramer's classic masterpiece). Last year Bruce Grether produced MindfulMasturbation for Men  on DVD in that same area of enlightened sexuality. These "television programs" for private, individual viewing take advantage of the visual nature of sexuality. Needless to say, sex books benefit from ample illustration. And a visual presentation about sex is an excellent way to convey material about spiritual meaning, a "gimmick" to get viewers to open their minds and receive more information than they were expecting.

Michael Brewer and Thomas Alan Berg contacted me a few weeks back and asked if I would be interested in reviewing their new DVD, Out & About with Brewer & Berg. At first it didn't seem like something I wanted to review, but once I got into the DVD, I was dumbfounded. I have never seen a "travelogue" like this. It's at once hilarious and quite spiritual, leaving you emotionally and physically drained. These guys are highly educated and splendidly witty. They possess a very powerfulmeans of getting the essence of their message across: they seem to reach out and hug their audience, sharing the love they posses for gay spirituality and life in general. I'd love to know these men and just hang out around them, absorbing all that positive, loving energy. I am so very proud of these extraordinarily talented souls and encourage you to buy this production. More, please, Michael and Tom!

OUT AND ABOUT WITH BREWER AND BERG
BREWER AND BERG are part of a new and still very rare breed of gay men - those who have taken the lesson and experience of coming out (essentially we might say learning to think for and trust oneself) and expanded that core of liberation into other areas of their lives… especially the spiritual. They turn around what has become almost a modern archetype - the gay man who, rejected and abused by religion, chooses to turn his back on spiritual affairs. Unfortunately he thereby cuts off his access to a vast and infinitely exciting source of creative power, a power these two entrepreneurial examples of delight and fascination have discovered, entered into and fallen in love with.

Shameless Plug

Three reasons to watch the DVD
Out & About with Brewer & Berg, Episode One: Search for a new mythology :

1. Zippy graphics and pity quotes:  Filmmakers/hosts Michael Brewer and Thomas Alan Berg pepper this hilarious documentation of their "follow your bliss" vision quest with quotes from gay thinkers, gay writers and philosophers, and in category all her own, Shirley MacLaine. They urge us to remember these words from Shiva Purana: "The phallus is the symbol of God, whose existence is perpetual joy, the Source of all pleasure."
2. Chiseled bubble butts:  B & B love to film "X-rated sculpti," of which they consider Michelangelo's David worth a "pilgrimage". In a "mega-metaphysical moment," they spot a David "in the flesh", who is gleefully stalked and filmed.
3. We really are everywhere:  Finding homoeroticism in the Vatican is not that difficult. However, it takes two very skillfulexplorers to uncover same-sex celebratory sarcophagi in the otherwise gruesome Hall of Death. They call it a "close encounter of the archetypal kind."

To the top

"We went on a Vision Quest in search for a new mythology big enough to include the great beauty, wonder and unique role of gay men in the evolution of our cosmos - and we found the David. Michelangelo's magnificent David symbolizes everything good and beautifuland perfect about our Divine Gayness. It is a monument in marble, one which proclaims that we are Gods IN the flesh!"
